Figure 116. Hematoxylin and Eosin staining using 50x objective of normal gallbladder. 1 – mucosa, 2 – muscularis propria, 3 – blood vessels. It should be remembered that the gallbladder lacks submucosa (Image courtesy of VE, used with permission).
The lamina propria, contains loose connective tissue, nerve fibers, and vessels.
Muscle layer – contains bundles of fibers with various directions – circular, oblique or longitudinal, but which do not form well established layers as in other parts of the gastrointestinal system.
Subserosal layer – with a structure similar to the lamina propria; sometimes small aggregations of lymphocytes around the vessels, and paraganglia can be identified (Mills, 2006).
The gallblader does not have a muscularis mucosa nor a submucosal layer. The extrahepatic bile ducts contain the following structures:
Mucosal layer – containing a single layer of high columnar cells, with basal nuclei.
A stromal layer, containing dense connective tissue with collagen and elastic fibers.
Duct of Wirsung contains an epithelial layer similar to that of the common bile duct, surrounded by a dense layer of connective tissue.
